A sloped grassland overlooking the Hamilton Valley to the north with mountain views to the west. The property is served by a road running along its south edge, and has a wildlife protection easement to the north. Similar properties lie to the east and west.

Program

A house for a retired couple, with the main living spaces on one level.

Solution

A layered plan in which the rectilinear form spreads from east to west allows the primary living spaces to take advantage of the views. To buffer the living spaces from the road, a secondary zone extends along the south. Protected from snow by an overhanging roof, the entry walkway acts as a third layer. A lattice adjacent to the front door defines the entry and screens the porch from the road, forming the final layer.
