"Cooking together with all the open space and the view is definitely more fun."

View Ridge Mid Century Remodel
Seattle, Washington
Site
An east-facing, existing mid-century modern house in the View Ridge neighborhood of Seattle.
Program
Remodel and refresh a mid-century residence improving the overall functionality, thermal comfort, and livability.
Solution
The homeowners lived in this home for a number of years, patiently working with a dated kitchen, bad energy efficiency, and poor climate control. The project addresses each of these key issues while also renewing the modern aesthetic within the existing footprint of a classic 1950’s post and beam structure. The existing masonry fireplace was removed to create an open floor plan, with the living-dining-kitchen as a single space. A functional “wedge” sits below the beams, with a fireplace, kitchen, bench, and storage integrated within. Most of the windows were replaced, roof and wall insulation added, and upgraded electrical and plumbing were included in all areas of the work.
